If you want to check the Operating System of some website that you do not have access to, you can do it from SSH using the nmap command with the following parameters:

nmap -sV -A -O www.example.com

It will most likely not give you the exact OS but what you should look into:

Running (JUST GUESSING) : Sun Solaris 9|10 (98%), Sun OpenSolaris (98%),
Sun embedded (90%)
Aggressive OS guesses: Sun Solaris 9 or 10 (98%), Sun Solaris 9 or 10,
or OpenSolaris 2009.06 (98%), Sun Solaris 9 or 10 (SPARC) (97%),
Sun Solaris 10 (96%), Sun OpenSolaris 2008.11 (95%), Sun Solaris 9 (94%),
Sun Solaris 10 (SPARC) (93%), Sun Storage 7210 NAS device (90%)
No exact OS matches for host (test conditions non-ideal).

The same command can be used to identify the web server – such as Apache or Microsoft IIS.
